First—the thick, misty damp fog, then—the warm, bright yellow sun. Followed by the salty tickle of a light ocean breeze, and the sparkling phosphorescence atop moonlit water. Moment to moment, atmospherics change. Moment to moment, moods change.

March 2007, “Wanderings of an Artist’s Mind”

I was recently looking at photography sites for some much-needed inspiration—a mental kick-in-the-pants so to speak. Mike Tedesco, Pro Photo Community, interviewed several professional photographers and the articles appear on a Microsoft site for photographers. Ah, inspiration and fodder for more Wanderings!

The words and art of Matthew Jordon Smith, Celebrity Photographer, caught my eye. Ya, I know, you just never know where inspiration can come from do you?

Tedesco wrote, Matthew...emphasizes shooting what excites you. All too often, Matthew sees young photographers look at who’s hot and try to copy them. ´You have to know why you shoot and what you love about photography. Shoot from the heart. Shoot what you love. Shoot what moves you.´”

I could just kiss Matthew for those words! His philosophy is so on target. I wholeheartedly agree with his statement and have spoken often of this approach to photography—or for that matter any form of art—to artists everywhere. The November 2006 “Wanderings of an Artist’s Mind” touched on this some—slow down, look around you, take a breath, think, then go for it. This is the next step—use your heart. Create your own art, not someone else´s.

What brought you to art, your art, in the first place? Was art around you as a child? Did your parents or a relative spark that interest in you? Was it a class trip, a course you took as a child or young adult, or a class a friend took? Were your parents artists? Perhaps it was the pure beauty of the world around you at a some moment and the desire to, somehow, capture it. That moment came from your heart and sole, it created a desire, a need.

Where are you now in your creative life, is everything progressing the way you feel it should be or are you at a stumbling block, at a cross roads not knowing where to go from here. As artists, we will all come across obstacles, lack of inspiration, mental forays into doubt. Ok, sometimes we also have actual forays of just plain bad art...but nothing is lost when this happens. You will learn from this, maybe not immediately, but one day.

When this happens, it is only human to look for a quick fix. Do you ever think, oh, I can do what so and so does, it looks so easy, and they are making money at how they do it, so why not, why can’t I?

STOP—do not go after what is hot or who is hot, do not copy (it is illegal and unethical to say the least). You may emulate some of the styles or features of another artist, you may pay homage to the artist, but you cannot copy the artist.

Instead, take inspiration; learn from what you are looking at. Study what the artist did, what methods or styles they used. What angle, lighting, lens, filter, F-stop, film (ya some still do that), paper, ink, unique technique, or brush, paint, and canvas—the list goes on and on. If possible talk with the artist, or start a discussion with other artists to see” what they see” (Aha, another article), get their opinions, do research—no amount of time you spend will ever be wasted. Take a class, read a book, search the internet.

Finally, in honor of the company we are getting ready for this month and from my heart, another Illusion for Eyes to the World, Curiosity.

Till next time—shoot, paint, draw, carve, write, sing, act at whatever form of art it is—but do it from your heart, do what you love, let it move you.
